Sulok Cafe: My New Favorite Tambayan in Antipolo City

Before 2016 ended, I was able to meet Rod and Andy of Sulok Cafe in Antipolo City for a WhenInManila.com feature. I had a lot of fun that afternoon because the millenial couple was so cool. I learned that they were also in their 20s and both of them used to hold corporate jobs. Last year, they decided to quit their jobs to put up their very own cafe. Guess what? They even used the money they originally intended for their wedding and married life to start this business, which opened just last July. It was a huge risk, sure. But to be honest, I really think that they made a great decision. Sulok Cafe was a great place, we thought. We were impressed by its nice vibe, as well as the fact that it encouraged people to be who they really were. It could be everyone’s sacred corner. We also noticed that the cafe was serving a wide array of dishes and drinks at affordable rates. That time, I was with my two sisters and …

My Coffee Harvest Tour Experience

I joined Cordillera Green Network’s Coffee Harvest Tour last December 10, 2016 in Benguet. And yes, I could say that it was a life-changing experience. Since the tour was set to begin early, I decided to travel to Baguio the night before the event. I booked a room at TALA Share & Guest House, managed by the same NGO. I arrived at around 10pm on December 9 and was welcomed by Kanami and Iuko, whom I became friends with immediately. They were so helpful and friendly. They even offered me coffee, which I learned was free for guests. Then we started talking about a lot of things right away. It was a great surprise, since I am an introvert and I usually find it hard to feel comfortable with people I have just met. I also fell in love with Tala and was sure that it would be my new home in the City of Pines. I decided to sleep around 1am, excited for the following day’s activities. I loved how cozy my room was and I was …

Taste Cavite at Island Cove’s Fishing Village

The Province of Cavite has always been a familiar territory for me. I have always been aware of what can be found here, particularly tourist attractions. Unfortunately, this sense of familiarity doesn’t apply to cuisine. Whenever I get questions about which food to try in this province, I always end up lost for words. This is why I got really excited upon learning about the Taste Cavite menu of Island Cove’s Fishing Village. It’s basically an attempt to bring together Cavite’s most valuable dishes under one roof, hence providing individuals an opportunity to embark on a unique gastronomic experience without having to drive around the province. I am lucky to have been part of a #TasteCavite food trip with fellow foodies one Saturday noon. It was a pretty fun and eye-opening experience, which I’d liken to a road trip with no dull moments. That day’s epic food journey began with Tahong Chips. It was love at first bite; the chips were fresh and crispy, with just enough level of saltiness. Although I could taste mussel in …

King’s Roast: Our New Favorite Food Stall in Makati

A lot of people associate Makati City with expensive things. Actually, there are a lot of good finds in this city, despite its reputation. One of them is King’s Roast, located at the Food Choices on the 3rd Level of Glorietta 4. It’s our new favorite food stall because it really serves great food at affordable rates.   Among its bestsellers are Liempo and Roast Chicken. And to be honest, its Liempo is the best one I have ever had in my life. Its Roast Chicken is impressive, too. I have already tried both the Captain’s Roast Chicken (classic lechong manok) and the Calypso Roast Chicken (Caribbean-inspired) and have been really impressed. Other dishes served here include Mushroom Melt, Black Pepper, and Braised Asian. If you are not into meat, it’s okay, since King’s Roast also serves vegeratian dishes, namely Vegetable Stir Fry, Asia Noodles, and Spicy Tomato Vegetable.   For the side dishes, you may choose from Garlic Mashed Potato, Herbed Potato Wedges, Corn on the Cob, and Mac & Cheese. To learn more about King’s …
